James A. O'Shaughnessy

Jim focuses his practice on the representation of municipalities, school districts and school boards, with a particular emphasis on employment and labor, student discipline and special education.
Jim graduated from Hamilton College and Magna Cum Laude from the University of New Hampshire School of Law. While in law school, he participated in the Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program, a rigorous two-year bar practicum, which allowed him to begin practicing law the day he received his diploma. Jim was an active member of the Manchester Conservation Commission from 2008-2011, serving as Chairperson from 2010-2011. He now resides in Concord with his wife and son.
Growing up in a family of teachers and educators, Jim developed a passion for education that complements Upton & Hatfield’s long tradition of representing school districts throughout New Hampshire. Prior to joining the firm, Jim worked for over four years as the director one of the largest childcare centers in the state. His experience running a small school and a family business is an asset to his clients.
Jim was a presenter at the 2010 Bradley F. Kidder Education Law Conference on the topic: Use of Social Networking Websites. The Internet and Other Forms of Electronic Communication.
His recent case:

2010 – Along with senior partner, John F. Teague, Jim successfully defended Concord School District against attempts by several individuals to stop the District's elementary school system reorganization and construction. Baer v. N.H. Dep't of Educ., 160 N.H. 727 (2010).
